If you have children, it is important to find a preschool or school and apply for a place as early as possible. Most childcare centres are run by the municipality, but there are also private daycares and parent cooperatives.

In Jönköping Municipality, there are several preschools and schools. For more information, visit Jönköping Municipality’s website: Children and Education External link, opens in new window..

Children in Sweden can start pre-school class at the age of six. This is an optional school form, but most six-year-olds attend. Pre-school class is free and focuses largely on creative activities and play.

All children are required to start compulsory school in August of the year they turn seven (first grade). Compulsory school is free and mandatory for all children up to the end of ninth grade.

After completing compulsory school, students continue to upper secondary school, called “gymnasium,” where they can choose programs with either an academic or vocational focus. Sweden also has several international schools that teach in English.

University studies are free for residents of Sweden and for EU/EEA citizens.
