First Master of Science in Engineering graduates from JU hit the job market

The first Master of Science in Engineering graduates from the School of Engineering (JTH) at Jönköping University (JU) have now stepped out into the job market.

“We are always looking for new talent and these gradutaes are very interesting to us,” says Christer Hilton, Manager of Mechanical Design Robotics Residential at Husqvarna.

It is students from the five-year Master of Science in Engineering programme Industrial Product Realisation at JTH who have now finished their degree. Two of them are Petter Ydrestrand and Elaine Ljungberg, who both feel that they are ready for working life.

“We have knowledge in all parts of the product development process and can contribute with insights and knowledge across the board. What is special about our education is the breadth of it, and our close collaboration with business. That makes us attractive among many employers, not least as project managers,” says Petter Ydrestrand.

Most of the class, like himself, also had a job lined up even before graduation.

"Able to work in a variety of areas"

Elaine Ljungberg feels that the education has given her both theoretical competence and practical experience.

“My degree provided a breadth of knowledge that allows me to work in a variety of different areas, industries and positions. Two highlights from my studies have been the industry-based course (internship) and the degree project . It gave me the chance to apply what I had learnt in practical situations and broaden my skills. One thing that surprised me is how closely aligned the education is to industry both in the close exchange and its relevance,” she says.

"Contributes a lot to business"

Petter Ydrestrand did an internship during the spring at Husqvarna together with Rasmus Brask Nilsen. Christer Hilton, Manager of Mechanical Design Robotics Residential at Husqvarna says that they would have been considered for employment if they had not already accepted jobs elsewhere.

“Like other JTH students who come to us, they have a great desire to learn while keeping the underlying theory fresh in their memory. In addition, they can add new perspectives,” says Christer Hilton.

He emphasizes that cooperation with JTH means a lot to Husqvarna and he has many examples of really talented JTH students.

“They contribute a lot to the business life of the city and the region and ensure that we get hold of the right skills."

Unique Education

Patrik Cannmo, Director of Education at JTH emphasizes that the Industrial Product Realisation programme is a broad education that provides knowledge in both mechanical engineering and industrial economics.

“I think that these students will be very attractive on the labor market and perhaps especially for small and medium-sized companies in the engineering industry. The unique thing about the education is that it is a combination of traditional mechanical engineering courses and courses in economics, project management and entrepreneurship,” says Patrik Cannmo.
